Woman gang-raped, threatened by duo after husband refused to pay extortion money

In the middle of public outrage over the gangrape and murder of a woman in Mumbai’s Sakinaka area, a shocking incident has been reported from Bihar’s Bhagalpur, where a 25-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by two men on Saturday, reportedly after her husband refused to pay a ‘hafta’ (extortion money) of Rs 500, say reports.

In her complaint to the police, the woman said that Sawan Yadav and Kanhaiya demanded Rs 500 from her husband as extortion money for liquor and food. After her husband refused, they forcibly took him to an isolated area, where they brutally thrashed him.

As maintained by the complainant, after some time, Sawan approached her and asked her to meet Kanhaiya for seeking forgiveness. He threatened her saying that if she did not do it, then her husband would be killed. Scared, the woman decided to meet Kanhaiya. Her husband, however, managed to escape from the spot.

According to a report by The Times of India, the woman alleged that Kanhaiya, who had a gun, threatened her and raped her. He even stimulated Sawan to sexually assault her. She, later, somehow managed to free herself and escape. She found sanctuary in a house in the vicinity. There, people gave her clothes. Later, the cops were alerted.

Following the complaint, the medical examination of the victim was carried out and efforts were initiated to arrest the accused duo. “We are also looking into the criminal antecedents of the accused,” the report quoted SP Swarn Prabhat as saying.

This incident comes days after a 30-year-old woman passed away at a Mumbai hospital after she was raped and assaulted with a rod in Sakinaka area. On Sunday, a team of the National Commission for Women met the family of the victim and visited the crime spot. The NCW team also met the acting Maharashtra DGP Sanjay Pandey.
