He said that the matter of him becoming party chief will be clearer when elections happen.

Congress MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi on September 9 indicated that he is not out of the picture for the party’s top post. He said that the matter of him becoming party chief will be clearer when elections happen.

"There is no confusion in my mind at all. Whether I become president (of Congress) or not will become clear when the elections for the president post take place. This Yatra has a political element to it. Obviously, because it's the Congress's Yatra. But I decided to join it because I believe in the ideology of the party. Hopefully, I would learn a couple of things about this beautiful country, and two-three months later, I would be a little wiser," Gandhi said when asked if he would be the Congress president again.

The election for the next Congress president will be conducted on October 17 and the votes will be counted two days after the election. Party leaders can file nominations from September 24 to 30.

What Is Going On In Congress?

Currently, the grand old party is dealing with the fallout of the series of high-profile exits that include Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal, and Ashwani Kumar among others. The party is grappling with intra-discord and the big question is still there whether a non-Gandhi can lead the party as its president.

Recently, Ghulam Nabi Azad, after exiting the Congress, criticized Rahul Gandhi for ‘childish behaviour’ and ‘glaring immaturity’

Congress Presidential Election Deferred

The election was scheduled to be conducted in September, but the deadline was extended by a month.

Rahul Gandhi’s Refusal

The Wayanad MP has refused to return as the Congress chief after he quit in 2019 owing to responsibility for the grand old party’s major defeat in the national election.
