UP woman allegedly gang-raped on pretext of 'nikah halala'

A woman in Uttar Pradesh was allegedly gang-raped on the ostensible reason of nikah halala. The horrifying incident happened in Agra’s TP Nagar area on Saturday. According to reports, the woman had approached a maulvi as she wanted to remarry after her husband had given her a 'triple-talaq' in a fit of anger.

The victim stated that while her husband had asked for a 'triple talaq', he later felt remorse for his decision and decided to remarry. The maulvi asked the woman to perform 'nikah halala'.


Under nikah halala, a woman who wishes to remarry the man who gave her triple talaq, has to marry another man, consummate the marriage, get divorced and observe 'iddat'. Iddat refers to a period of separation.

The accused, who is a resident of Meerut's Lisari Gate area allegedly asked the woman to marry a man, identified as Riyasat Ali. The maulvi then sent the woman to a hotel room where two men allegedly gang-raped her and left her injured. The victim by some means managed to get home and narrated the ordeal to her brother who registered a police complaint, The Times of India reported.

The cops sent the victim for a medical. After the incident, the woman's husband turned aggressive and refused to get a complaint registered against the maulvi. While two of the accused have been taken into police custody, the maulvi is still at large. Narendra Singh, SHO of TP Nagar police station stated, "Raids are being conducted to track him down. "
