Rajasthan: 250 Dalits converted to Buddhism after two youth assaulted for worshipping Goddess Durga
Hurt by the alleged atrocities of the upper caste community, around 250 Dalits renounced Hinduism and converted to Buddhism in the Baran district. The Dalit families took out idols of Hindu gods and goddesses from their homes and immersed them in the river Baithali.
The Dalit families took the step after two youth were allegedly thrashed by the upper caste community for performing aarti of Goddess Durga.
According to Balmukand Bairwa, president of District Bairwa Mahasabha Yuva Morcha, an aarti of Goddess Durga was performed by two Dalit youth in Bhoolon village on October 5. Furious over the act, sarpanch representatives Rahul Sharma and Lalchand Lodha brutally thrashed the Dalit youth. They pleaded for justice from the President to the district administration, but the police did not take any action against the sarpanch representative.
Angered by the negligence of the administration, Dalit families on Friday took out a protest march and immersed idols of Hindu deities in the river. They also took the 22 vows of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and adopted Buddhism.
DSP Pooja Nagar said, "The names of the sarpanch's aides have not been mentioned in the complaint lodged by the complainant at the police station concerned. Someone has been trying to give political colour to the incident. "
The matter is under investigation.
