A clip showing a group of women from Darjeeling being subjected to sexual harassment and racial discrimination by a few men on the streets of Delhi has gone viral on social media. The Delhi Commission for Women has taken cognizance of the incident and the police have launched a probe into the matter.

According to reports, the episode took place on the intervening night of July 18-19 when the women, from Darjeeling, were waiting for a taxi just outside a restaurant in South Delhi. The accused saw the women and began sexually harassing them. The accused allegedly passed racist and smutty comments and asked them about “hourly rate for sexual activities”.

The women quickly went ballistic over the highly objectionable action of the men. They shouted at the accused and began recording the incident on their mobile phones. As they warned of making a video clip viral on social media, the accused expressed his regret and walked away.

“The woman then took a cab and went defence colony market for dinner. While the complainant did not make any call to the PCR that day, she gave a complaint to the Safdarjung Enclave police station SHO today,” a report by The Times of India quoted a senior police officer as saying.

In keeping with the complaint, police lodged a case under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and launched a probe into the matter. The cops have obtained the video clip of the incident from the complainant. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest suspects.

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) took notice of the incident and wrote a letter to the Delhi Police. The DCW wrote: “Please provide the copy of the FII are along with details of the accused identified and arrested, steps taken to identify and arrest the accused in case of non-arrest, and a detailed action taken report in the matter by July 25.”
