Navratri: Watch morning Aarti performed at Mumbai's Mumba Devi Temple

Early morning 'Aarti' was performed at the prominent Mumba Devi Temple in Mumbai on the first day of Navratri. Scores of devotees thronged various temples of Goddess Durga across the country and offered prayers on the first day of the 9-day-long festival. The festival, which began today, is dedicated to Maa Durga and her nine avatars.

Navratri is celebrated with religious zeal and fervour across the country by Hindus. During the festival, devotees worship the Goddess and her nine avatars—Maa Mahagauri and Maa Siddhidatri, Brahmcharini, Maa Chandraghanta, Maa Shailputri, Maa Maa Kushmanda, Maa Skandmata, Maa Katyayani, and Maa Kaalratri.

Each day of the auspicious festival is dedicated to each Goddess. The first day is dedicated to Maa Shailputri, who is known to be a form of Parvati and a reincarnation of Sati. On the first day, devotees visit the temple and offer prayers to the goddess. Shailputri, the name is formed from two words—Shail, which means mountain, and Putri, which means daughter.
