National War Memorial: Here’s what every Indian should know about memorial built for over 25,000 soldiers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National War Memorial near India Gate on 25th February in the memory of those soldiers and the real Indian heroes who sacrificed their lives since Independence.

The complex spread over 40 acres, is built in a commemoration of martyred 25,942 soldiers with their names etched in stone forever.


Earlier on Sunday, Lieutenant General PS Rajeshwar, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff told reporters that ‘it’s a tribute to our fallen heroes and the bravest of the brave.’

As per the reports, PM Modi will unveil the National War Memorial at around 5:30 pm today.
Before the inauguration, here’s what every Indian should know about the memorial.

It has been built in the form of four chakras and each of them has different values of the armed forces, with an eternal flame.

The memorial has been built in commemoration of over 25,000 security personnel who have been killed for country’s freedom, including Indo-Pakistan wars of 1947, 1965 and 1971 and also the Indo-China war in 1962 and also Indian Peace Keeping Force operations in Sri Lanka and the Kargil war in 1999.

The memorial is just adjacent to the India Gate and Amar Jawan Jyoti, which was constructed in 1931 to commemorate over 83,000 Indian martyrs who were killed in World War 1 and the third Anglo-Afghan War.

The obelisk that stands in the complex is at height of 15.5 metres and it can be visible as anyone would enter the complex.

Visitors will find Veerta Chakra with six bronze murals depicting different actions of battle. Each mural has weight in between 600 kg and 1,000 kg.

Tyag Chakra has been made of granite bricks and each brick is in the name of soldiers who sacrificed their lives since Independence.

As per the officials, presently, there are 25,942 names exit on these walls and there is also scope that more names can be added.
