Mumbai Police registers FIR against 150 members of Tablighi Jamaat who attended Nizamuddin event

Mumbai’s Azad Maidan police on 2nd April lodged a first information report (FIR) Tablighi Jamaat who had taken part in Delhi’s Nizamuddin event and later visited Mumbai. No arrest has been made so far.

Zonal DCP Sangramsingh Nishandaar statedd, ‘We have filed an FIR against the members of the Tablighi Jamat and conducting an investigation into the matter.’

The Mumbai police since 20th March has indicted in excess of 1,000 people for disobedience to order duly put into effect by public servants during the lockdown.

Hemant Parab, deputy chief fire officer of the city fire brigade department has filed a complaint. The police invoked section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection) and 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.

Sections of the Disaster Management Act have also been invoke in the FIR. The 150 members of the religious sect, many of them foreign nationals, had taken part in a congregation in Delhi’s Nizamuddin and later visited Mumbai last month. Police suspect some of the foreigners, who were coronavirus positive, had transmitted the disease to other members of the Jamaat as well.

The group traveled to other places as well. The government had made an appeal that those who attended the congregation at Delhi must come forward for scanning. However, many of them are believed to not have come forward, forcing the government to file a complaint.
