Mumbai: Police constable arrested for alleged involvement in theft of ornaments worth Rs 7 crore
Police constable has been taken into custody for his alleged connivance in the theft of ornaments worth Rs 7 crore from a jewellery shop in suburban Oshiwara last month, an official stated on Sunday.
The police constable, Santosh Rathod, is appointed to Oshiwara Police Station. Jewellery worth Rs 80 lakh was retrieved from him, said the official.
Apart from Rathod, a man named Pankaj Ramlivar Gaud, who works as a sweeper in the housing society where the jewellery shop is situated, has also been taken into custody, senior inspector, Jagdish Shinde stated.
"Rathod was arrested after his role were established in the crime. Ornaments worth around Rs 80 lakh were recovered from his possession," he added.
He has been placed in police custody till 6th May, said Jagdish.
The police had earlier apprehended Vipul Ananda Chambriya (35), president of a city-based NGO, along with six others in connection with the case. Jewellery worth Rs 5.39 crore had been retrieved from Vipul.
Police stated that the proprietor of the jewellery store, Rajkumar Luthra, had registered a complaint on 22nd April saying that his jewellery store was broken using a gas cutter and ornaments worth Rs 7 crore were looted.
