Maharashtra: Sadhu’s corpse found at his ashram in Nanded’s Umri, investigation underway

A dead body of a seer (sadhu) was found inside his ashram in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Saturday, ANI reported.

“The sadhu’s body was found at his Ashram in Nanded’s Umri late last night,” ANI quoted Nanded Superintendent of Police Vijaykumar Magar as saying. He further added that an investigation is underway in the matter.

The incident comes a month after three people, including two sadhus, were beaten to death by over 500 people at Palghar. The incident happened on 16th April.

Up to this point, over 160 accused have been taken into custody by the state CID team whichin investigating the Palghar lynching case. Ten arrested minors have been sent to juvenile home in Bhiwandi.

When presented before the Dahanu court on 12th May, the accused named in the FIR number 76/2020 have been placed in judicial custody, while the accused named in FIR number 77/2020 (murder) have been plaaced in police custody till 26th May, said Parmanand Ojha, legal representative of the three victim.

The Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Singh who was on duty when the Palghar lynching happened, was sent on compulsory leave by state home minister Anil Deshmukh on 8th May. He has been transferred outside the district but is still waiting for his order.

Dattatreya Shinde has taken his place as the new SP of Palghar.

Earlier, the Maharashtra home ministry had suspended five police officials, including the Kasa police in-charge assistant police inspector (API) Anandrao Kale, his subordinate, sub-inspector (SI) Sudhir Katare, and transferred around 35 police personnel from the station to various departments in Palghar.
