In a shocking incident reported from Kerala’s Ernakulam, the city police have taken a man into their custody for alleged murder of his 11-year-old daughter over a financial crisis. The accused has been identified as Sanu Mohan.

The 11-year-old girl has been identified as Vaiga. The victim’s dead body was recovered from the Muttar river in Kochi on 22nd March, and that is when the case became known.

The accused has been absconding after the dead body was found.

The incident happened after the accused man picked up his daughter from her mother's house on the pretext of taking her to see a relative.

Initially, police had suspected that the accused had committed suicide by jumping into the river. However on conducting a search operation it was discovered that he had fled.

The investigation guided the police to Karnataka from where the accused was arrested on 18th April.

As maintained by the police, Sanu has confessed to the crime. He said he was undergoing a financial crisis, and owed huge sums of money to many people. Not being able to cope with the pressure, he decided to commit suicide along with his daughter.

However, after committing the crime he ran away to Tamil Nadu and then to Karnataka, said Kochi City Police Commissioner C Nagaraju.

"We don't see this is a crime committed spontaneously. There is sufficient information to believe that he has been planning this for a long time. The accused tried to ensure that he left behind no digital footprint. After selling his car in Tamil Nadu he decided to travel by public transport. However, there are still some missing links in his statement," Nagaraju said.

The accused will be taken to his flat in Pukkattupady and Muttar river where the victim’s body was recovered.

The investigating team will also record statements of his wife.
