Jharkhand: Widow brutally thrashed, stripped for having 'loose character'

A women was allegedly beaten and stripped at a village in Jharkhand on Monday. The incident happened in Gherabera village of Seraikela-Kharsawan district. The woman was allegedly tortured by 10 people from the same village.

The incident cropped up on Tuesday, when the woman approached the police and filed a police complaint. Eight others were named by the accused.


On the day of the crime, three women identified as Oliba Kusum Topno, Sisila Purrty and Angela Topno reached the woman's house and dragged her for around 50 metres. The two women then handed over the victim to a group of people who accused her of having a loose character.

According to a report by The Times of India, The woman was then stripped and beaten by the accused. The accused allegedly told the woman to leave the village. Allegedly, Oliba, Purty and Topno wanted the victim to leave her job of an Anganwadi worker so that they could hand over the position to someone else.

The victim in her statement stated that she stayed in the village with her son but left for her mother's house in Khunti district on Tuesday. The woman gathered the courage to go to the police after she was supported by her family.

Following the incident, the woman was taken to the MGM Hospital for medical care but was later taken to Santevita hospital in Ranchi. A cop privy to the case said, "Villagers wanted her to leave the village after the wife of her lover attempted suicide twice in the past few months."
