Independence Day 2020: When Mahatama Gandhi missed Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech

India is all gearing up to celebrate their 74th Independence Day on 15th August this year. It is the day when we got independence from British rule in the year 1947 after decades of slavery. Countrymen will celebrate the freedom day and will also remember the sacrifices that freedom fighter made during their struggle against the British Empire. Among all was Mahatma Gandhi who made numerous sacrifices in the independence of the country.

He saw India becoming independent however, he could attend the ceremony that took place in Delhi. Not just this he also gave a miss to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s historic speech when India got independent. As per the reports, on the night of India’s independence, Nehru has his speech Tryst with Destiny from Viceroy Lodge on the midnight of 14th August.

His speech was heard by the whole world however Gandhi gave a miss because this happened at midnight and by that time Gandhi had already left to sleep around 9 pm that day.

Now, talking about the Independence Day ceremony that happened on 15th August, Gandhi was in Noakhali, West Bengal i.e thousands of kilometres away from New Delhi. Also, the place where Mahatma Gandhi was staying was facing communal violence between Hindu and Muslim, so he was on a hunger strike. This is why Gandhi couldn’t attend India’s first independence ceremony.
