After a female student at Banaras Hindu University was allegedly molested on campus, the university has erupted in violent protests over the last three days. Scores of students came out to oppose the university administration's inaction regarding the incident, with both male and female students gathering in large numbers.

The protests escalated when students gathered outside the Vice Chancellor’s office, in the hope of scheduling a meeting with him on Saturday evening. However, the demonstrations soon turned violent as police resorted to a lathicharge, even manhandling protesting students and media persons covering the event.

According to reports, seven students were severely injured, including four women who have reportedly suffered head injuries. At present, the BHU campus remains under strict surveillance and is closed until 2 October.
