In photos: Gauri Lankesh's death sparks protests across India
In the wake of the cold-blooded murder of veteran journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh, protests have been organised all over the country. 55-year-old Lankesh was shot dead outside her residence in Bengaluru by three motorcycle-borne assailants. Lankesh, an outspoken critic of the Modi government and its hindutva agenda, had allegedly confided to friends that she had received death threats. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah termed Lankesh’s killing an “assassination on democracy.”
Even as investigations into Lankesh's murder are ongoing, journalists, actors, politicians and everyday citizens from all over the country have denounced the brutal killing. Today, the public anger against Lankesh's death took the form of peaceful protests in cities across the country. Here are a few photos from the protests in Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram and Ahmedabad.
