IIT-M canteen staff sexually assaults second-year student on campus
In a shocking incident reported from Tamil Nadu, a staff at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) College canteen was taken into custody by police on Tuesday, for allegedly sexually assaulting a second-year student on the campus.
The alleged sexual assault happened on 24th July, near New Academic Complex in IIT-M, When the female student was going back to her hostel on her bicycle. The female student was allegedly sexually assaulted by an unidentified man and she got away from the location with injuries.
Two days following the shocking incident, the matter was brought to the attention of the administration by a friend of the victim.
In an official statement, the institute said that they had stright away begun the investigation. They said that they had looked into the CCTV footage and shared pictures of almost 300 people who matched the description given by the student.
On the basis of the investigation and the CCTV footage, police on Tuesday arrested the accused, identified as Chandan Kumar, a native of Bihar’s Nawada district. He has been charged under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The accused was remanded in police custody after being produced before the Saidapet judicial court.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
