IAF officer arrested after rape complaint by woman colleague
A flight lieutenant has been taken into police custody for allegedly raping a fellow worker on the Air Force Administrative College campus. Reportedly, the unfortunate incident occurred on 10th September, inside the premises of the campus.
The accused person has been identified as Amitesh Harmukh. A native of Chhattisgarh's Durg, the accused was in Coimbatore to take part in an induction programme with 29 other officials who went to the campus on 15th August.
On the day of the crime, the woman went to the officers' bar with her roommate to meet her fellow worker. The woman got back to her room after a while. Reportedly, the accused raped the woman when she was in the room.
According to a report by The Times of India, the victim approached a senior Indian Air Force officer for the case but no action was taken against the accused. Following this, the woman approached the state police who registered a complaint against the accused, identified a Amitesh.
Following the registration of the complaint, the central all-woman police inspector, E Nirmala, took Amitesh into custody and charged him under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused was sent to Udumalpet sub-jail on Sunday.
An investigating police officer, privy to the case stated that, "IAF authorities requested us not to lodge him in jail. We asked them to approach the court as the matter is sub-judice."
