As the horrific incident became known, Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal wrote to state Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, accusing police of handling the case with "insensitivity". DCW chief also sought justice for the woman.
As per the information, the incident occurred in the Dabra area of Ramgarh village in the Gwaloir district. The victim was allegedly forced to consume acid ny her husband and sister-in-law on 28th June. As the victim's condition worsened, she was taken to Delhi for treatment on 18th July.
Five days following the incident, police, based on a complaint by the victim's mother, filed a case against the woman's husband and other accused under the Dowry ACT. However, no strict action was reportedly taken.
Earlier, the woman was admitted to a nearby hospital in Gwalior by a neighbour. As the victim’s condition deteriorated, she was taken to the national capital for treatment.
Later, the victim’s brother approached the DCW, following which a team got her admitted to a Delhi hospital and recorded the victim’s statement before a sub-divisional magistrate here, new agency PTI reported.
The incident got attention when DCW chief Swati Maliwal took to Twitter to inform that she has written a letter to the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in connection with the case.
In her letter, DCW chief claimed that the Madhya Pradesh police registered a "weak" FIR in the case on 3rd June, "omitting the sections related to acid attack and termed this heinous act as domestic violence".
The DCW chief said that the victim alleged in her statement that her husband was in an extra marital affair with a woman, she sstated that when she came to know about it, her husband brutally thrashed her and made her consume acid.
Swati Maliwal and DCW’s Promila Gupta met the victim at the hospital. "She is in a very critical condition and according to the doctors, her internal organs are totally burnt and damaged," Maliwal said.
"The woman's food pipe, stomach and intestines have got burnt and are visible. She can neither drink nor eat anything anymore. She is also vomiting blood very frequently," Swati Maliwal said.
"The doctors are not very hopeful of her recovery as she is in a very bad state. It is a matter of shame that the Madhya Pradesh police dealt with such a serious case with this kind of insensitivity," Maliwal said.
"I have written a letter to the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, asking him to get the culprits arrested and ensure action against the police officers who tried to weaken the case," Maliwal said.
In the meantime, DCW has been helping the victim at the hospital since she was admitted there, PTI reported.
