Giant leap for womankind: Meet two women scientists who headed ISRO's Chandrayaan 2 mission

ISRO has scripted history after the successful launch of Chandrayaan 2 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh on 22nd July 2019.

Not only ISRO but the whole nation is on cloud nine for this unbelievable success achieved by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).


On Monday, ISRO launched its million dream project to the Moon on-board its powerful rocket GSLV-MkIII-M1 (Baahubali) to unexplored the South Pole of the celestial body by landing rover.

There are the best brains behind this mission who has burnt the candle at both ends to turn this big dream into reality.

Interestingly, the giant mission was helmed by the two incredible women scientist, Ritu Karidhal and Muthayya Vanitha, the Mission and Project directors respectively.

Meet the two ace Ritu Karidhal and Muthayya Vanitha, who worked for years to watch Rs 978 crore dream finally coming true.

1. Ritu Karidhal, Director of Chandrayaan-2

 

She is an aerospace engineer, who has been working with ISRO for the last 22 years. She played a vital role not only for Chandrayaan 2 but Ritu was also a part of ISRO’s Mangalyaan, the mission to Mars.

Talking about Chandrayaan 2, Ritu as Director has a responsibility to plan the entire mission journey like manuover landing, appropriate time, route until the spacecraft successfully achieve its mission.

Ritu is the alumnus of Lucknow University and Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

2. Muthayya Vanitha, Chandrayaan-2 mission’s Project Director

 

Another brain behind the ISRO’s mission to the Moon who has played a crucial role in India’s second lunar mission. She has been working in ISRO for the past 32 years.

During Chandrayaan 2, ISRO’s billion dream project, her job responsibilities were lab testing, designing, and others. She was in a managerial position.

She had completed her bachelor’s in electronics and communication Engineer and had spent years in lab testing and in other experiments too as a junior most Engineer.

The role of project director is to contemplates design and technology that is to be used for satellite.
