This sex drug may help in fighting cancer, new study reveals

Sex drugs are manufactured to treat men with erectile dysfunction or to increase the stamina. However, according to a new study, it has been found that Viagra, one of the most widely discussed sex drug to treat erectile dysfunction may have the potential to fight cancer. Viagra was a hit in the market as soon as it was introduced.

Since medical experts were trying their best to find a cure to fight cancer, the clinical research by experts in Ecancermedicalscience revealed that the drug which is prescribed to treat male erectile dysfunction can be included in the new experiment to manufacture anti-cancer drugs.

Although,Viagra was designed earlier to help the people with low blood pressure but then now it is typically used to treat male erectile dysfunction.

Viagra is a brand name for sildenafil citrate which is used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Researcher Pan Pantziarka said: “In many respects, sildenafil is the ultimate repurposing success story. It was originally developed for angina, repurposed for erectile dysfunction and then again for pulmonary arterial hypertension, and now it has the potential to be repurposed again as an anti-cancer drug.”

The researchers identified that the selective phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors have the potential to be used as anti-cancer drugs. These PDE5 inhibitors are a form of drugs that include drugs like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.

The latest study revealed that PDE5 inhibitors is a wide range of mechanisms of action in different cancer types, like glioblastoma multiforme.

“Checkpoint inhibitors have radically altered the landscape in oncology, but there remain significant challenges in terms of increasing the number and duration of responses. Emerging evidence suggests that PDE5 inhibitors may be one mechanism for achieving this,” Pantziarka added.

PDE5 are not currently licensed for cancer treatment but scientists are still researching as the drugs show potential to be included with current and emerging standard of cancer treatments in oncology.
