Man who ate the world’s hottest chilli pepper lands in hospital

When you eat a really hot chili pepper, you end up having pain in your stomach. Maybe a lot of pain or it causes loose stools. Sometimes, it feels that you have just swallowed a burning coal, you may weep, puke and you think what the hell just happened.

A 34-year-old man participated in the contest to eat the 'Carolina Reaper' apparently the hottest pepper in the world was admitted to the hospital with constricted blood vessels in his brain because of a chili pepper.

The man went straight home from the competition, but he was still suffering from a headache and it was “excruciating,” so he went to the emergency room.

The man is a New York state resident suffered a headache called 'thunderclap' and his problems started when he ate the whole Carolina Reaper which is said to be the hottest chili pepper in the world, as per the Guinness World Records, while participating in the hot-pepper-eating competition.

“when he ate the pepper (Carolina Reaper), all of a sudden he started having a severe headache, which was the worst headache of his life,” says Dr. Kulothungan Gunasekaran, from the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where he was taken.

It is commonly known as “a thunderclap headache,” which was described as a “very severe form of a headache by Gunasekaran and it develops a sudden pain which goes to peak within seconds. It’s usually an uncommon condition but is associated with nausea, vomiting, and photophobia.”

About 80 per cent of the time, people have more than one episode of a thunderclap headache, he said.

It has been reported that the most common cause of this headache 'thunderclap' is bleeding which happens inside the brain. So, doctors looked for another possible cause: reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS).
