Labour Day 2018: Google celebrates the 'May Day' with distinctive Doodle illustration of workers’ tools

Labour Day is celebrated to acknowledge the achievements of workers. The day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

Google Doodle is celebrating Labour Day, the origin Labour Day date back to the late 19th century when the trade union and labour movements were growing in the US. The illustration depicts different tools which the workers use including a stethoscope, a hard hat, a laboratory beacon and cooking appliances for example. The day is also observed as a public holiday in many countries including India.

The workers, trade unionists, socialists and Communists protested in the 19th century in the United States for long hours, the protest was about the poor conditions under which labourers were being made to work in. They wanted an eight-hour day movement — eight hours of work, eight hours for recreation and eight hours of rest.

Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September and considered the unofficial end of summer in Canada and the United States.

In India, the May Day started in Chennai on May 1, 1923 by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. Its leader, Comrade Singaravelar, held two meetings to mark the occasion, one at Triplicane beach and the other on the beach opposite the Madras High Court. The party passed a resolution stating that the government should grant workers a national holiday on May 1.
