Chaitra Navratri 2019: Observing 9-day fast? Know what to eat and avoid during this Navratri

The nine-day long Hindu festival has begun on 6th April and it will continue till 14th April 2019. During this Chaitra Navratri, devotees used to observe nine-day fast to worship the Goddess Durga and her nine avatars (Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri).

However, there are four Navratris fall every year but, the major two Navratri i.e. Sharad Navratri and Vasant or Chaitra Navratri celebrated widely.


During Navratri season, people refrain from eating foods items like food grains and wheat flour, meat, alcohol, onion and etc. If you are also planning to observe fast for nine days then, think before what you are eating.

Each and every day of Navratri has a lot of customs and rituals which are associated with the incarnations of Goddess Durga.

People used to wear colours which are related to the nine avatars on each day. Also, offers prasad to the Goddess on a daily basis.

While some made food items for fast with ingredients like potato, sabudana, sama chawal. Amarnath etc.

Today, we are telling you some food that you can and can’t eat while observing nine days fast.

Food items that can eat this nine-day festive season:

1. Sabudana
2. Kuttu Atta or buckwheat
3. Sama Chawal or barnyard millet
4. Makhana or fox nuts
5. Dry Fruits
6. Fruits
7. Dair products like milk, curd and etc
8. Use Sendha namak or Halite while cooking food for vrat

Food items that can’t eat this nine-day festive season:

1. Onion & Garlic
2. Salt
3. Grains
4. Spices
5. Alcohol, egg and meat

Navratri is the best time to detox yourself and eat healthy food items only.
